Currently I’m working as a volunteer in a “wijkcentrum”, I couldn’t really explain what that place is in English nor Indonesia, What I do there is working behind a bar (drinking bar, not prison bar) and serve drinks, mostly coffee, for these dutch people who looks for “gezellige tijd”.
This is the picture of wijkcentrum - de componist
I’m working with another Indonesian woman who have been living in The Netherlands for 38 years, and we can really laugh about how blunder can it be when it comes to culture different, here is her story.
(Lets call this Dutch guy with Jan since this is -for me- the most common Dutch people name)
Jan was having a dinner together in Indonesia with the family of his wife. His mother-in-law, just like a typical Indonesian woman, very kind, care and loving, cooked his favorite food, sardine.
She brought a big bowl of sardine for dinner for the entire family. In Indonesia its quiet common that you put the big bowl of meat and/or vegetables in the middle of the dinner table and to be divided later for the other family members. Seems like some dutch people doesn’t know this one :D.
Because Jan is the guest of honor, he may start first. But something unexpected happened. Jan took the entire big bowl of sardine for himself and start eating.
It’s really a big surprise for the rest of the family member, but because we’re Indonesian, the most friendly and polite people in the world :p…it will be extremely impolite to correct him.
The mother in law was just grumbling in Indonesian, (that way Jan wouldn’t understand her), “what a jerk, now I need to cook something else”.
Jadi ceritanya gw akan menempuh hidup baru di belanda..ada beberapa hal kecil yang sangat mengganggu pikiran gw..yaitu cebok pake tissue..
Men..gw selalu kepikiran itu bersihnya disebelah mana coba?..sedari gw lahir sampe 24 tahun gw selalu diajarin cebok pake air
Setelah di belanda, bentukan wc-nya kaya gini :
Padahal dirumah selalu pake yang begini :
Nah jadi mulailah minggu pertama gw di belanda..gw selalu berprasangka kalo gw make tissue banyak bgt..kaya 1 roll cuma kepake buat 3 hari (jadwal gw teratur tiap hari *too much information*)
Gw kepikiran..jangan2 gw ga efisien makenya..akhirnya gw beranikan nanya ama temen gw tanpa malu2…(berhubung orang belanda itu blunt and direct)
"Please teach me how to use toilet paper efficiently, it feels like I’m wasting it too much. In Indonesia I always clean my *** with water"
